Socorro clinches playoff berth for first time since 1997, El Paso stays alive


For the first time since 1997, the Socorro boys basketball team is headed to the playoffs. The Bulldogs clinching a berth in the Class 6A playoffs with a win over Franklin in a play-in game, 58-51 in overtime on Friday night.

Matt Pena led Socorro with 21 points in the win and Eddie Franco added 16 points.

The Bulldogs will play Odessa Permian in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Tuesday in Alpine, Texas.

In Class 5A, El Paso won a thriller in double-overtime of their play-in game against Bowie, 98-97 on Friday night. Senior Jackson Yellen scored a game-high 30 points in the win for El Paso. The Tigers will play a second consecutive play-in game on Saturday against Austin, the third team in a three-way tie in District 1-5A for the final berth in the Class 5A playoffs.
