Renovations to the Sun Bowl that were initially scheduled to be completed in time for the 2019 season are now not going to be finished until the start of the 2020 season.
UTEP athletic director Jim Senter confirmed to KTSM on Wednesday that the contractors for the project are having trouble finding subcontractors that will keep them within the budget of $15 million that was initally laid out in April, 2018. The El Paso Times was the first to report the story on Tuesday.
Senter said the project will still go on as promised and all the renovations will be made, but it could cost more than originally planned and will not be done in time for the 2019 season. Instead, the Miners’ brass is now shooting for a 2020 completion date.
“Everybody is disappointed because we all want it to be done for the 2019 season,“ Senter said. “But if you talk to anyone who’s doing a major construction project, they’ll tell you that it’s taking longer and it’s more expensive than initially estimated. So it kind of goes with the territory.“
UTEP is renovating the press box, adding luxury suites and club level seating, in addition to implementing more decorations on the concourse.
