Norfolk State defeated UTEP 75-62 in the first round of the 57th annual Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Friday night.
The Spartans used a big second half run to defeat the Miners after UTEP got within two points early in the second half.
Evan Gilyard returned from injury to score 20 points off the bench for UTEP. Mastadi Pitt paced Norfolk State with 24 points.
Norfolk State will square off with East Tennessee State in Saturday’s championship game. ETSU defeated Wyoming on the other side of the bracket. The Cowboys and Miners will play for third place at 5 pm Saturday.
