New Mexico State’s Kelsey Horton won the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week honor for April 17-23, the league announced on Monday.
“Kelsey continues to lead our team in many ways,” associate head coach Catherine Heifner said. “Her poise and consistency has been key to our success.”
Horton hit a double, three home runs and a grand slam in the Aggies five games last week. She ended Arizona’s no hitter in the bottom of the seventh with a long ball over the center field fence for the lone run against the No. 3 Wildcats, last Tuesday. It was just the fifth homer Arizona’s Taylor McQuillin had given up all season.
She hit another home run in her first at-bat in the series opener against CSU Bakersfield last Friday. Horton then helped NM State clinch the series over the Roadrunners when she went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, and a grand slam in the Aggies’ 13-3 victory. In WAC games, Horton leads the conference in batting average (.568), slugging percentage (1.297), on-base percentage (.644), runs (18), hits (21), RBI (20), home runs (8) and total bases (48).
This is the fourth-straight Hitter of the Week honor for NM State and the seventh weekly honor this year. This week’s honor is also the Horton’s third Hitter of the Week award this season and the fourth of her career.
New Mexico State hosts Grand Canyon to close out conference play. The three-game series begins on Friday, April 28, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. (MT).
