NMSU Defeats Creighton, Western Michigan


The NM State softball team defeated both Creighton and Western Michigan to close out the Troy Cox Classic on Sunday at the NM State Softball Complex. The Aggies topped Creighton 9-0 and beat Western Michigan 8-0.

Game One

The Aggies (9-2) had nine runs and eight RBIs on 13 hits against Creighton. Rachel Rodriguez and Fiana Finau scored two runs each. Emma Adams racked up a game-high three hits and four RBI, which included a bases-loaded home run. In 5.0 innings pitched, Karysta Donisthorpe had two strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

Creighton’s (4-6) Sydnee Eck pitched 2.0 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits as she faced 19 batters.

After leaving three runners stranded in the first inning, the Aggies found their stride offensively as they racked up a 7-0 advantage in the second inning. Amy Bergeson hit a bunt single and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Fahren Glackin hit a single to bring Bergeson home for the first score of the game.

Glackin advanced to second on a Lucy Mendoza bunt single before Rodriguez loaded the bases with a single to the pitcher. Emma Adams then hit her second home run of the season to amass four RBIs. Finau hit a double up the center before Corrin Green hit a two RBI home run for a 7-0 lead.

NM State added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. After reaching first base on a walk, Rachel Rodriguez collected her 10th stolen base of the season to reach second before she scored on an illegal pitch. Finau was intentionally walked and then stole second before scoring off a Brennalyn Nakamura single to left field to give the Aggies a 9-0 victory over Creighton.

Game Two

NM State continued their momentum in the second game of the day as they faced Western Michigan. The Aggies had eight runs and seven RBI on eight hits. Kelsey Horton and Tatum Reedy both had two runs. Kelsey had a game-high three hits, which included her sixth home run of the season.

Makalya Adams garnered her third win of the season as she pitched 5.0 runs and amassed four strikeouts as she faced 18 batters. Anissa Sanchez pitched 1.1 innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits in 12 batters faced.

In the bottom of the first inning, Adams and Horton hit singles before Finau was walked to load the bases. Reedy reached first on a fielder’s choice as Adams was thrown out at home, but Glackin hit a double to give the Aggies a 3-0 advantage after the first inning.

The home team added five runs in the second inning. Mendoza hit another bunt single, stole second and advanced to third as Rodriguez hit a single up the middle. Adams reached on a bunt to load the bases as Horton stepped to the plate. Horton hit a four RBI home run, her second bases-loaded home run of the season. B. Nakamura struck out swinging but reached first base on an error by the catcher. On the same play, Reedy advanced home to give the Aggies an 8-0 victory over Western Michigan.

The Aggies take the field again on Thursday as they face BYU at 2:00 p.m. MT in the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
