When 12-seeded NMSU takes on takes on 5-seed Auburn, the Aggies will be trying to get their first win in the NCAA tournament since 1970.
It’s an upset they have been wanting to pull off for a long time and they think they can finally do it.
They believe the time is now.
One reason they won’t cite, but that is certainly interesting, is head coach Chris Jans has had some luck in this same arena here in salt lake city.
In 2013, he was an assistant coach at Wichita State, when the 9-seed Shockers upended 1-seed Gonzaga in the second round of March Madness. Wichita State eventually made a run all the way to Final Four that year and its something he loves to reflect on.
“We started our run here and I was talking to my wife and family about it, we’ll have great memories here of being in this building and being in this city,” Jans said. “I don’t think it’s gonna help us win tomorrow but it’s nice to go down memory lane tomorrow.”
