New Mexico State softball welcomes No. 13 Arizona for doubleheader

The New Mexico State softball team hosts No. 12 Arizona for a midweek clash at the NM State Softball Complex. The Aggies face off against the Wildcats in a doubleheader, beginning at 3:30 p.m. MT.

WHERE TO WATCH

The first contest of the doubleheader against ranked UA is set to be broadcast on FOX Sports Arizona, FOX Sports Prime Ticket and FOX College Sports Pacific with Adam Young on the call and Brian Cox serving as the analyst. The second game can be viewed for free on the WAC Digital Network.

HORTON HITS A BOOM

Kelsey Horton continues to climb in the career record books during her senior campaign. The slugger sits in second for home runs (58) and total bases (435) and fourth for runs scored (173) and RBI (179).

REVISTING THE MARY NUTTER CLASSIC

The Aggies posted a 2-3 record when the team traveled for the Mary Nutter Classic. In NM State’s win over North Carolina, New Mexico State posted five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead from the Tar Heels. Analise De La Roca pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out a pair.

For the team’s win over Cal, Mya Felder put the squad on top with a two-run homer in the fourth, giving NM State the 2-1 advantage at the time. The Aggies needed extra innings wit get the victory and an RBI single by Nikki Butler put NM State on top 6-5 in the 10th inning.

KNOW YOUR FOE: NO. 12 ARIZONA

Arizona comes to the City of Crosses with a 15-5 record. The Wildcats also competed at the Mary Nutter Classic and went 4-1 including wins over then-ranked No. 20 Oklahoma State and Team Japan in an exhibition contest. When hosting the Wildcat Invitational last weekend, Arizona went undefeated including a pair of walk-off victories against Kent State (7-6) and No. 19 James Madison (8-6).

Leading UA in the circle this season is Taylor McQuillin, who posts an ERA of 1.40 accompanied by 94 strikeouts. Offensively, Malia Martinez leads the way batting .393 with a .607 slug. Jesse Harper posts a squad-best .908 slugging percentage and 23 RBI for her junior campaign.

COMING UP: ASU INVITATIONAL

Following the midweek clash, NM State hits the road for the ASU Invitational, taking place in Tempe, Ariz. The Aggies are set to face Michigan, No. 19 James Madison, South Dakota, Lehigh and the No. 15 host Sun Devils. New Mexico State’s first game against the Wolverines is slated for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March. 8.
