The New Mexico State baseball team closed out its four-game series againstDelaware with the finale on Sunday at Presley Askew Field. Another strong offensive outing led the Aggies to an 11-4 victory over the Blue Hens for the series sweep.
For game four to close out the weekend, NM State (11-2) sent Chance Hroch to the mound to go up against Delaware (0-10) freshman Jack Dubecq. Hroch openedwith a quick 1-2-3 inning before the offense got on the board. In the bottom of the first, the Aggies had a runner on second base when an infield grounder saw a throwing error go over the first baseman that allowed one run to score for a 1-0 NM State lead.
This lead did not last long, however, when the Blue Hens got their first runs of the game in the top of the second. Delaware had a runner on third anda double to left field brought in the oppositions first run. Two batters later, the Blue Hens had runners on the corners and a single to right that scored one more run to put the Aggies down 2-1 that lasted into the fourth inning.
The bottom of the fourth saw the Crimson & White retake the lead. Runners stood on first and second with no outs and Logan Ehnes laced an RBI singlethrough the right side to knot the game up at two apiece. This left runners on the corners and in the next at-bat, a fielder’s choice scored the man from third to give the Aggies a 3-2 advantage.
Delaware was then able to add to its total in the next frame. A passed ball on a swinging third strike put one runner on for the Blue Hens and the nextbatter sent a ball over the wall in left field to put NM State behind 4-3.
Trailing by a run, the Aggie offense responded in the bottom of the fifth. The leadoff batter, Joey Ortiz, was plunked to get on base and then Nick Gonzalesknocked a double to left as Ortiz hustled all the way home to tie the game up at four. Then with two outs and a man on second, Ehnes had a single to center that scored a run for a 5-4 Aggie lead.
NM State then added to its lead in the sixth. The Aggies had two runners on with two outs and Gonzales opened the scoring roped an RBI single to centerfor a 6-4 lead. Then with men on the corners, a passed ball advanced both runners to bring in one run before Tristen Carranza added one more run with a single to center for an 8-4 Aggie lead.
Each side was held scoreless in the seventh and then the Crimson & White added a few insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two men on andno outs, Gonzales stayed hot at the plate as he crushed a three-run home run over the wall in left to give the Aggies an 11-4 advantage.
Delaware hoped to mount a comeback in the ninth with a pair of runners on and only one out, but NM State had other plans retiring the final two battersto secure the 11-4 victory and series sweep over the Blue Hens. Hroch (3-0) picked up the win on the mound after tossing 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts.
At the dish, the Aggies were led by Gonzales who went 3-for-5 with five RBI and his NCAA-leading 10th home run. Ortiz also had a great dayat the plate going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
