Burges standout Tristen Newton added another mark to his already-impressive prep career on Friday night, as El Paso’s all-time leading scorer eclipsed 3,000 career points.
Needing just 18 points to go over 3,000 entering Friday’s game against Austin, Newton got the mark in the second quarter on an emphatic two-handed dunk. He finished the game with 39 points in a 67-48 Mustangs victory.
“It was great. It was thanks to my teammates though, he poked the ball away and got me a wide open dunk,” Newton said. “It’s a great feeling and I’m glad i got to do it in front of the home crowd that supports me every day.”
Newton and the Mustangs are currently ranked 5th in the state of Texas in Class 5A, and are undefeated in district play. Newton averages over 39 points per game, which leads all of Texas and is third in the nation.
