Brooke Salas was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week after posting the her fifth double-double of the season and the school’s first triple-double since 1992 over two games at the FIU Holiday Tournament in Miami, the league announced Monday.
This is her second weekly honor of the season and seventh of her career. Salas also earned three WAC Player of the Week honors during the 2016-17 season and two during the 2017-18 season.
Salas, a senior from Placentia Calif., started the FIU Holiday Tournament with an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double in a 68-67 loss to South Alabama on Thursday, Dec. 20. It was her fifth double-double of the season and 18th of her career.
She followed up that game with the school’s first triple-double since Andrea Kabwasa on Feb. 15 1992, posting 32 points, 22 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in an 82-64 win over Alcorn State in the tournament’s consolation game. Her 32 points are a season-high and also the third time Salas has recorded 30 points in a game. Salas’ 22 rebounds are a new career-high and put her at fifth all-time for a single game while her 11 blocks tied a school record. She also moved past Madison Spence into eighth place on the NM State all-time scoring list and sits at 1,504 points for her career.
The New Mexico State women’s basketball team continues its road trip in the Golden State as it heads to Riverside, Calif., to take on UC Riverside on Friday, Dec. 28, at 8 p.m. (MT) before visiting UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Dec. 30, at 3 p.m.
