Greater El Paso Football Showcase All-Star Draft features Division One talent

For the second consecutive year, the city’s best high school football players took center stage on Sunday for the 2018 Greater El Paso Football Showcase All-Star Draft. Once again, this year’s draft featured Division One talent across the board.

The first overall selection was made by the Blue Thunder and they selected Del Valle High School quarterback Raymond Montez.

The second pick went to the Red Storm and they took Parkland High School running back Deion Hankins, who is committed to play his college football at UTEP. Hankins broke the city’s all-time rushing record earlier this season.

“I was never the one to garner much attention, but through football that’s been the case over the past few years,” said Hankins. “I’m still getting used to it, but I know that I’m doing it for my city.”

“It’s great,” said Pebble Hills running back and Air Force commit Caleb Gerber. “All these great players and being up here on the stage with them is an honor. Being able to play at the Sun Bowl for the first time will be a great opportunity.”

There were 92 selections, but perhaps the most impactful selection was Franklin running back and wide receiver James McClain-Green. McClain-Green was an honorary selection by the committee and continues to fight in a local hospital following last week’s car crash. He underwent his fifth surgery on Sunday morning and is in recovery mode.

The Greater El Paso Football Showcase All-Star Game will take place Saturday, December 22 at Sun Bowl Stadium.
