Fans Can Watch Kentucky Derby Jockeys at Sunland Park

Racing fans can watch three Kentucky Derby winning jockeys race and they can meet another during Derby Weekend at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.

Mario Gutierrez, winner of the 2012 and 2016 Kentucky Derby, is listed to ride Choo Choo in the 15th running of the Sunland Derby (Gr. III) which will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. John Velazquez, winner of the 2011 and 2017 Kentucky Derby will ride Prince Lucky and Stuart Elliot, winner of the 2004 Kentucky Derby will ride Dark Vader. Despite Gutierrez, Velazquez and Elliot’s winning records, another horse – All Out Blitz  – is the 4-1 favorite to win.

The winner of the Sunland Derby receives 50 points to the Kentucky Derby. Second place earns 20 points. Third place gets 10 points and fourth place earns 5 points.

Meanwhile, Pat Day, the 1992 Kentucky Derby Winning Jockey, will be available for a meet-and-greet at the Sunland Derby Gala on Friday, March 23, 2018. Tickets to the gala are  $100 per seat with table and sponsorships available. Proceeds from the gala benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Kentucky Derby winning jockey Pat Day will also be available for interviews with local media at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino’s Turf Club.

Day was the very first jockey to win the Sunland Derby in 2003 when it was still known as the Winstar Derby. He is also a five-time Preakness winter, three-time winner of the Belmont Stakes and four-time winner of the Breeders Cup. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1991 and is a four-time winner of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey.
