Redshirt senior Eli Chuha was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday after a dominant weekend on the road that led the New Mexico State men’s basketball team to a road sweep of Seattle U and Utah Valley.
This is the second weekly honor for NM State this season as well as the first for Chuha this year and second of his career.
The 6-7 forward averaged a double-double in the two road games, averaging 16.5 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting a gaudy .800 clip from the field. Chuha picked up his first double-double of the weekend in a lop-sided victory over Seattle U with 13 points on 10 boards and a pair of blocks while going 6-of-8 from the field.
In Saturday’s much anticipated match-up with Utah Valley, the veteran forward tied his season-high in the scoring column with 20 points while tying his career-high on the glass with 14 rebounds in NM State’s thrilling comeback victory over the Wolverines and snapped their 22-game home win-streak.
With his 33 points this weekend, Chuha needs just 81 points to join the 1,000 points club at NM State and become the 35th player to do so in program history.
New Mexico State will get some extra days to rest and prepare with only one game this weekend as it travels to UT Rio Grande Valley for a 6 p.m. (MT) showdown on the WAC Digital Network.
