Coronado point guard Ayaan Sohail signed his letter of intent to play division 1 college basketball at Lamar University on Friday.
The 6’1 guard averaged 20.5 points per game this past season, leading the Thunderbirds to 21 wins and a Bi-District championship. He has a chance to play right away for the Cardinals.
“The fact that it’s very close to home and the coaching staff believing in me played a big role in it,” Sohail said. “The fact that their point guard just left and I’d be coming in as a freshman go-getter. That played a big role in it.”
Sohail had one other Division One offer from the University of Hartford. His older sister, Nehaa, plays college basketball at Utah Valley University.
The Cardinals, coached by Tic Price, finished last season 20-13. Lamar’s last NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2012.
