Aggies to play in Cayman Islands Classic

The New Mexico State men’s basketball team is headed to George Town, Cayman Islands, for the third addition of the Cayman Islands Classic this November 25-27 Caymax Sports Ltd. announced.

“We are thrilled to be a part of next season’s Cayman Islands Classic,” head men’s basketball coach Chris Jans said. “We are already looking forward to the competition next November.”

The Aggies are the first team from the Western Athletic Conference and first team from the state of New Mexico to compete in this multi-team event. Other teams in the event include, Colorado State, George Mason, Loyola (Chicago), Nebraska, Old Dominion, South Florida and Washington State.

NM State returns 4-of-5 starters from last year’s record-breaking 30-5 team that nearly knocked off fifth-seeded Auburn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Not only will coach Jans have the services of those returning starters, he’ll also return 11 total players that contributed to last year’s run – including 75-percent of last year’s offense.

Of the eight teams battling it out in John Gray Gymnasium come late November, four teams saw action in postseason play. Of those four, NM State and Old Dominion competed in the Big Dance while South Florida claimed the College Basketball Invitational. The tournament also features three regular-season champions in New Mexico State, Old Dominion and Loyola (shared).

Previous tournament champions include Creighton (2018) and Cincinnati (2017). A complete schedule of events will be released at a later time in addition to the tournament bracket.
