The New Mexico State baseball team took the field for the first time in 2019 as the Aggies get set to defend their WAC Tournament championship. Friday marked the first official day of practice and this season brings big expectations to this year’s ball club.
“We feel like the program is in good shape,” said head coach Brian Green. “The expectations around the community and in the locker room are much different. That’s exciting and the kids are pushing us.”
Green took over the program in 2015 and the Aggies won just 11 games in his first season as head coach. Since then, NMSU won 34 games in 2016, 35 games in 2017, and 40 games in 2018, including an appearance in the NCAA Regional.
“Last year we got a taste of the regionals and we loved it,” said senior infielder Caleb Henderson. “We won the WAC. It was the first time in school history and it was awesome. We got a taste of it, but we are still hungry.”
The Aggies will put their appetite to the test on Opening Day, Friday, February 15 against Texas Southern.
