New Mexico State softball hosted New Mexico for a doubleheader at the NM State Softball Complex on Tuesday. The Aggies topped the Lobos 8-0 in six innings and 11-3 in five innings.

GAME ONE
After a scoreless opening frame for both teams, NM State (17-14) began a rally with Mya Felder drawing a leadoff walk. Fellow freshman Kayla Bowen reached on an error and a second misstep on the play by UNM (10-26) brought Felder home and allowed Bowen to reach third. After Casie Roberto walked, she stole second and Bowen came home on the play, extending the lead. The third run of the inning came home when the Lobos committed their third error of game during Kelsey Horton’s at bat.

In the following frame, Chloe Rivas picked up a leadoff walk before Felder crushed her fourth home run of the season, putting the Aggies ahead 5-0.

Pitching a perfect game through five innings, starting pitcher Samaria Diaz allowed her first hit, a double down the left field line, to start the sixth. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with just one out on the board but a pair of strikeouts kept the opposition scoreless in the frame.

Starting the bottom of the inning, Brandy Hernandez reached on a single before Jeanelle Medina hit a double to put the pair into scoring position. Horton loaded the bases with a walk before a single by Victoria Castro scored a run. A wild pitch by New Mexico brought in the second run of the inning before Chloe Rivas hit a single up the middle, handing the Aggies the 8-0 walk-off victory..

Diaz pitched a 6.0 inning complete game shutout, helping the junior to a 6-6 record. She allowed just one hit while striking out 13 batters, which tied her career best.

GAME TWO
NM State looked to carry its momentum into the second game but the Lobos drew first blood, scoring on an error and a two-run homer in the second frame. However, Nikki Butler countered the Lobos’ momentum with a solo home run over the rightfield fence.

The Aggie rally continued in the third with a single by Horton. Three-straight doubles followed, giving the squad the 4-3 advantage over UNM. An error scored the fourth run of the frame, leaving New Mexico State ahead by a pair.

The bats stayed hot in the fourth and after Brandy Hernandez and Castro walked, Mya Felder came through with a three run homer. A pair of singles by Rivas and Bowen followed before Butler hit a three-run home run of her own, extending the 11-3 advantage.

Following the offensive surge, starting pitcher Analise De La Roca came back to the circle, looking to close out the victory. The sophomore struckout the first batter she faced before forcing the next two batters to groundout, ending the 11-3 win after just five innings,

De La Roca pitched 5.0 innings during the complete game, moving to 4-4 with the win. The sophomore allowed three runs on four hits while striking out four New Mexico batters.
