Aggies fall to Sooners, top Campbell

After falling 8-0 to No. 14 Oklahoma, the NM State softball team found its stride offensively and defeated Campbell 10-1 on Saturday evening at the NM State Softball Complex on day two of the Troy Cox Classic. 

Game One

NM State racked up four hits against the Sooners. Makayla McAdams, after allowing three runs in the second inning, prevented Oklahoma from scoring for three-straight innings. She threw two strikeouts and faced 28 batters. Oklahoma’s Paige Parker pitched 6.0 innings and allowed four hits and one walk.

The Aggies held the Sooners scoreless in the first inning for the second game in a row as the visiting team was retired in order. The Aggies put two on base in the bottom of the inning, but both were left stranded to leave the game at 0-0 heading into the second inning.

Oklahoma took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Amy Bergeson garnered the Aggies’ first hit of the game in the bottom of the inning, but was left on base to end the inning. McAdams and the Aggie defense held the Sooners as the team caught one stealing and forced two ground outs in the top of the third inning.

Rodriguez reached base for the second time of the game as she hit a single up the middle. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emma Adams and moved to third, but was left stranded heading into the fourth inning.

The Aggie prevented the Sooners from scoring in the fourth and fifth innings. McAdams garnered her second strikeout of the game to open the fourth inning. The defense then forced a fly-out and four ground outs over the fourth and fifth innings to hold the Sooners to a 3-0 advantage.

Lucy Mendoza hit a bunt and used her speed to beat the throw to first base, but she was left stranded at the end of the fifth inning. Oklahoma then added five runs in the top of the sixth inning to capture the victory.

Game Two

The Aggies racked up 10 runs and eight RBI on eight hits against the Fighting Camels. Kayla Green pitched 5.0 innings and allowed just four hits and one run in 18 batters faced. Campbell had one run on four hits.

After retiring the first three Campbell batters in the top of the first inning, the Aggies took the lead. Rodriguez reached first on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an illegal pitch before the Aggies loaded the bases. Rodriguez then scored on an illegal pitch before Finau and B. Nakamura both hit RBIs as NM State took a 3-0 advantage after one.

The Aggies held the Fighting Camels scoreless in the bottom of the second as well, while they added four runs to extend their lead. Rodriguez used a bunt to bring Amy Bergeson home before Adams hit a one two RBI home run, which was followed by Kelsey Horton’s fifth home run of the season for a 7-0 advantage.

As Bergeson stole second, B. Nakamura scored in the third inning. Campbell scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning to cut the NM State lead to 7-1.

The Aggies added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. H. Nakamura hit a double and was brought in by an RBI single by Kennedy Johnson. Nue Sivia then crossed the plate on an Alexis Maynez RBI to give the Aggies a 10-1 victory over Campbell.

The Aggies take the field again tomorrow as they face Western Michigan at 9:00 a.m. and take on Creighton at 11:30 a.m. at the NM State Softball complex.
