El Paso Police have confirmed the identity of the man killed by an alleged drunk driver near Franklin High School Saturday night as Gary Galbraith, 57 of El Paso.

Galbraith was a professor of psychology at EPCC and was a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology with the Ysleta Independent School District, according to the district’s website.

Police say that Galbraith was crossing the street when Jose Jesus Mendez, 27, who was allegedly speeding and drunk, plowed into him at the corner of Redd and Westwind just before 9 p.m. Saturday. The truck and Galbraith’s body eventually came to rest inside the Franklin High School parking lot.

Mendez had two 17-year-old girls in the truck with him at the time of the crash. One of the girls was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

EPPD has charged Mendez with Intoxication Manslaughter and Accident Involving Death. His bonds total $350,000.

Friends and colleagues of Galbraith’s offered sympathy and condolences to him on social media during the week, saying he meant a lot and always had wonderful advice for teachers.
