The UTEP men’s basketball team put on an impressive performance in its 12-point win over UC Riverside on Sunday.
But one player, freshman Efe Odigie, continued to stand out for the Miners with his double-digit scores in every game this season.
Sunday was Odigie’s best game yet, as he registered a career-high 24 points and 11 rebounds.
He recorded his fourth double-double of the season, the most by a UTEP freshman since Terry Winn in 2015-2016.
“We are in December right now and we are playing more minutes than average freshmen at other schools,” he said. “So, we are now sophomores.”
UTEP Head Coach Rodney Terry says Odigie’s successes are no accident.
“I got the chance to visit with him the early part of last week and I really challenged him to want to be one of the best big men in our league,” Terry said. “When he was coming in, he was a guy that could score the basketball with his back to the basket.”
Odigie combined for 49 of UTEP’s 68 points in Sunday’s win. He and the team will face Norfolk State on Friday.
