The area’s only Level 1 Trauma Center will maintain its status as an optimal care center for injured patients.
University Medical Center has once again earned the Level 1 verification by the American College of Surgeons, which recognized the hospital’s ability to care for “every aspect of injury”.
The South-Central El Paso hospital houses the only Level 1 Trauma Center within a 280-mile radius of the city, officials tell KTSM.
According to a news release, the verification was made based on criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance.
Elements of verified Level 1 trauma centers include 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, prompt availability of specialty care, referral resources for nearby communities, and more, according to American Trauma Society.
“For two decades, we have been home to the only Level 1 Trauma Center in our region,” President and CEO Jacob Cintron said, “…we will continue our tradition of high quality, high standard of care for all trauma patients arriving at our hospital by helicopter or ambulance.”
