An El Paso man who is accused in the beating death of his girlfriend’s two-year-old son in 2012 is finally going to trial.
Ever Mendez, 34, is accused of beating 2-year-old Isaiah Villanueva at the home he shared with Villanueva’s mother and his brother on Lafayette on May 11, 2012. Mendez and the boy’s mother had only been dating three or four months according to court records.
Emergency crews were called to the home where they transported Isaiah to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy revealed that the toddler had been beaten with a blunt object in the stomach.
Mendez is charged with capital murder. The jury selection began Friday and testimony is expected to get underway Monday in the 205th District Court.
