EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 21-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle in the Lower Valley on Wednesday night, according to the El Paso Police Department.
Samuel David Birmingham, 21, died at the scene. This is the 56th traffic fatality in El Paso in 2020, compared to 46 this time last year.
Police said 32-year-old Aaron Lopez was driving eastbound in a Subaru Impreza at the 7800 block of Gateway Boulevard East, approaching the intersection of Giles Road. He was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed, entered the intersection on a red light and collided with the 2014 Kawasaki
Ninja that Birmingham was driving, which was southbound on Giles.
Birmingham, who was wearing a helmet and protective vest, was ejected from the motorcycle and
died at the scene.
Police said the collision was so severe that Birmingham’s motorcycle broke into multiple pieces.
Lopez suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Investigators believe contributing factors include Lopez failing to stop at the red light and operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed.
