The Las Cruces man accused of crashing a party and then running over and killing two of the guests in early May has been released from the hospital and charged with two counts of Murder.

Carlos C. Garcia, 50, is facing two murder charges after Las Cruces Police say he ran over Denise Chavez, 29, and Arturo Cordova, 36, in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 7. He was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center shortly after midnight Thursday morning.

Police say that Chavez and Cordova, who were cousins, were watching a boxing match in in the 4100 block of Calle Americana when Garcia showed up to the house around 3 a.m. looking for a friend. The group said they didn’t know Garcia, but let him into the party anyway.

About 45 minutes later, Garcia was asked to leave the house after he reportedly began acting inappropriately towards Denise Chavez. Witnesses claim that Garcia chugged half a bottle of vodka and stole several beers from the house on his way out.

Chavez, Cordova and a third relative followed Garcia to his gold GMC Yukon to make sure he was leaving when he allegedly began taunting the three and revved his engine as he sped up and down the street.

At some point, Garcia allegedly ran his Yukon onto the curb, hiting Chavez and Cordova before slamming into a rock wall near the intersection of Valley View and Winters.

Chavez and Cordova were pronounced dead at the scene and Garcia was serverely injured and taken to University Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

Garcia was officially charged with two counts of Murder and is being held on a $500,000 bond.
