Albuquerque Police have confirmed the identity of the victim killed in a shooting Saturday. The University of New Mexico has also issued a statement regarding the death of the student and baseball player.

Police say that 23-year-old Jackson Weller, a UNM student and baseball player was shot around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. Authorities say detectives are in the early stages of an investigation and are looking to identify the offender that fled the scene in the area of Central Ave. and Richmond.

“Our detectives are conducting a thorough investigation so we can provide justice to the family and friends of this young man,” said APD Chief Mike Geier in a statement. 

Officials with the university have also made a statement regarding the loss of their student. The UNM Director of Athletics Eddie Nunez said in a statement: 

“The loss of Jackson Weller is devastating to the entire Lobo family. He was a very special young man whose absence will be deeply felt. On behalf of Lobo Athletics and The University of New Mexico I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family friends, teammates and all who knew him – please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. our immediate focus will be on continuing to support all who are affected as they cope with this senseless tragedy,” said Nunez. 

The UNM Baseball team said via Twitter that the team’s weekend series against Air Force has been postponed as a result of this tragedy.
