Suspicious package found in Austin IRS building mail room

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Officials are investigating a report of a suspicious package in southeast Austin, Austin-Travis County EMS tweeted. One person is being evaluated and may be taken to the hospital, but it’s not known how they were hurt.

Austin police say the suspicious package was found in the mail room.

The call came in Friday around 12:31 p.m.in the 3600 block of S Interstate 35 service road. The Austin Fire Department and Austin Police Department are also responding. The FBI has taken over the investigation into this incident. 

According to the FBI, when the package was opened, a suspicious substance dispersed and came into contact with several employees. One of the affected people claimed to have a reaction to the substance.

According to a tweet from Austin-Travis County EMS, 18 people have been involved in the incident, but only two were transported to Dell Seaton with non-life threatening complaints. EMS says they will be clearing the area shortly.
