A replacement for El Paso State Rep. Joe Pickett will be selected in January.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a special election will be held on Jan. 29, according to a news release.

Candidates mush have their applications filed with the Secretary of State by 5 p.m. on Jan. 3, the release said.

So far, El Paso City Rep. Michiel Noe and El Paso Community College Board of Trustees Chair Art Fierro have said they are running for the soon-to-be vacant seat.

Pickett announced last week that he will step down due to a battle with cancer.

Picket has been in office for more than two decades.
