For the first time, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi designated El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar to preside over the U.S. House of Representatives as Speaker Pro Tempore.
In the role, Escobar will manage debate and other House proceedings from the Speaker’s chair in Pelosi’s absence.

The designation comes less than two weeks after Escobar was appointed to Congress.
“I’m so ready to get to work and reopen the government, ready to tackle some of the biggest issues and challenges of our generation,” Escobar said. “We’ve got to tackle huge issues like climate change, healthcare, gun safety, comprehensive immigration reform, there are issues the public expects us to address and problems to solve.”
