EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Police Department identified a 36-year-old man who was killed in a crash that happened in East El Paso on Friday night.

Ruben Chavez, Jr., of Horizon, died in the crash, which happened at the intersection of Gateway East and Lomaland just before 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

Jhair Hassim Acosta, 26, was charged with intoxication manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance, penalty group 1 (cocaine). He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $156,000 bond.

According to EPPD’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit, Acosta was driving a 2018 Silver Kia Forte, in the right lane on Gateway East when he struck a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja driven by Chavez, who was stopped at a red light. Chavez was thrown from the Ninja and died at the scene from his injuries.

This is the 26th traffic fatality this year, compared to 30 at this time last year.

El Paso Police said a pedestrian was run over and killed in East El Paso Friday night.

Special Traffic investigators were called to Lomaland Drive and Gateway East. Police alerted KTSM to the crash just after 10 p.m.

There was no immediate information on the victim or the driver involved.
