FINAL UPDATE: Police say the driver, identified as Martin Arambula Vargas 75, died from his injuries.

Upon further investigation, it was found that an SUV struck a deputy from the Culberson County Sherriff’s Department who was assisting with traffic control at the intersection of Horizon and Darrington, according to the Horizon City Police Department.

Police say the deputy is being treated in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to police.

UPDATE: Police say that TRI State along with Texas Department of Transportation were working at the intersection of Darrington and Horizon Boulevard along with other off-duty officers who were conducting traffic control.

Police say the vehicle involved struck an off-duty police officer who was conducting traffic control in the area. Lanes will remain closed for another three hours, according to police.

The off-duty officer does not work for Horizon Police, according to the Horizon Police Department.

Police add the collision happened at 10:23 a.m. and the driver along with the off-duty officer were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

TxDot El Paso says the crash involved a vehicle and a pedestrian, stating that all lanes north and south at Horizon are closed.

Police say the roads will be closed for several hours and are asking motorists to avoid the area.
