UPDATE: (1/22/18) Police on Saturday arrested the mother of an infant they say was severely injured last week and remains in critical condition.

Investigators say Caricia Lorena Ceballos, 19, violently shook her 7-week-old daughter earlier this month after the infant refused to feed. She is now charged with a felony count of child abuse causing great bodily harm (or death).

Police say Ceballos’ actions caused the infant’s head to go back and forth, and shortly after the infant fell asleep, Ceballos allegedly pinched and poked the daughter several times to see if she was alive.

Both Minnick and Ceballos are being held without bond in the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

A Las Cruces father is suspected of violently shaking his 7-week-old daughter causing her to stop breathing, and was arrested last week.

Marcus Alton Minnick, 19, and Caricia Lorena Ceballos, 19, of the 1900 block of Calle de Suenos, are charged with a felony count of child abuse causing great bodily harm (or death).

Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, Ceballos went to the store and left the baby with Minnick. Investigators allege that the baby began crying so Minnick picked her up from a bassinet and began shaking her back and forth.

Court documents reveal that Minnick allegedly told authorities that he was having work related issues and knee pain and felt as though the baby was crying and “having a tantrum.” He admitted to authorities that he realized what he was doing and immediately put the baby back in the bassinet.

Minnick began CPR on the girl and the child’s mother came home and called 911.

The baby was transported to Memorial Medical Center with CPR in progress and was revived by medical personnel and taken to University Medical Center in El Paso.

Doctors at UMC say the child had hemorrhaging in the brain, severe bilateral retinal hemorrhage in both eyes, global hypoxic brain injury and was malnourished. They also told investigators that the infant had rib fractures that appeared to be two or three weeks old.

The baby’s condition is considered critical and grave. She remains hospitalized in El Paso, her prognosis is unclear.

LCPD investigators issued a warrant for Minnick’s arrest Wednesday and he was taken into custody. He is being held without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
