Everyone at NewsChannel 9 – from our news and production department to sales and promotions are El Paso Proud. This past weekend we set out to give back to the community that gives so much to us as part of Founder’s Day.

This is the day where all employees from our parent company, Nexstar Media Inc. volunteer their time. This year, we volunteered for two days at two separate organizations – The El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank and the Humane Society of El Paso.

Volunteer and Community Outreach Program Manager Ryan Coulehan said volunteers are vital to the Humane Society because they help work with the animals, socialize, play, prep enrichment items, and help animals pass the time while they wait for adoption.

“Everything we do here is all about the animals. I think if you are an animal lover, working your butt off in this 100 degree weather comes easily. These guys benefit from it tremendously and I think volunteers get out a lot out of the experience as well,” Cohlehan said.

“The animals don’t care where you came from, what your past is like and they don’t care where you’re going from here. All they care about is in the moment and that you are spending time with them and playing with them.”

If you’re interested in volunteering at the Humane Society of El Paso, you can visit their website at www.hselpaso.org. Though we do issue a word of caution, you may just end up falling in love with all of the dogs and cats that you’ll experience an abundance of joy that can only be contained by adopting one of the furry companions.
