Motorcyclist dies a week after serious East El Paso crash

Motorcyclist Jose Contreras, 24, has died a week after a serious crash that left him hospitalized in east El Paso.

The crash happened Monday, July 24 just before 7 p.m. in the 9000 block of Gateway West. According to investigators, Contreras was riding his 2015 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle westbound on I-10 just past Viscount.

Police say Contreras lost control of his motorcycle and quickly exited I-10 onto Gateway West at Hawkins. He struck several wooden posts and suffered serious injuries at the scene.

Contreras was taken to Del Sol where he was hospitalized for more than a week before he passed away on Monday.

This marks the 35th traffic fatality of 2017 compared to 44 at the same time in 2016.
