Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of abusing his girlfriend’s teenage son Monday morning.

Julio Alvarado, 26, of the 2500 block of Moon River Loop, is charged with one count of intentional child abuse, a third-degree felony.

Shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the report of a domestic incident at Alvarado’s residence. Officers arrived at the residence and met with a 14-year-old boy who had a visible injury to his neck.

Investigators learned that Alvarado and his girlfriend were sitting in her vehicle, arguing on Monday morning. At some point the woman’s 14-year-old son came out of the house, walked up to the car and tried to intervene.

Investigators believe Alvarado stepped out of the vehicle, grabbed the boy by the throat and lifted him up before throwing him to the ground. The boy then went back inside the home and emerged with a knife. Words were exchanged before the boy went back into the home.

Alvarado was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
