Ever Mendez, 34, was found guilty of Capital Murder on Thursday in an El Paso court room for beating his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son to death in 2012.

The guilty verdict carries an automatic life sentence for Mendez, who has been awaiting trial for nearly five years in the case.

On May 11, 2012, emergency crews responded to a home on Lafayette in the Lower Valley where they transported young Isaiah Villanueva to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mendez was living with the toddler’s mother and his brother at the time of the beating. Mendez had only been dating the boy’s mom for about four months, according to court records.

An autopsy revealed that the boy had been beaten with a blunt object and kicked in the stomach.
