LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) - A Las Cruces man was shot and killed by a Las Cruces Police Department officer Thursday night following a domestic violence call.
What led to the shooting is being investigated by multiple agencies, which is standard procedure in an officer-related shooting.
The shooting happened at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 2400 block of Tiffany Drive, according to a police department news release.
Shortly after officers arrived to the domestic disturbance call, one officer fired at least one round that struck Gary McKinney, 47. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
As per Las Cruces Police Department protocol, the officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave.
Investigators did not release more information as interviews are still being conducted and evidence is still being collected, the release said.
The Officer-involved Incident Task Force is made up of investigators from New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police.
