Truck slams into east El Paso home, injuring one

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - One person is in the hospital after the truck he was driving slammed into an east El Paso home just after midnight Tuesday morning.

The crash happened in the 1400 block of Wedgewood Drive at Chinaberry Drive, just blocks from Eastwood Knolls Intermediate School at 12:20 a.m.

Emergency dispatchers confirmed one person was in the hospital with serious injuries. Police have yet to confirm the details leading up to the crash, but neighbors reported waking up to the chaotic scene.

"We were just inside the house and we heard what sounded like a loud screech and 'bam' and I saw a large cloud of smoke," neighbor Hugo Acevedo said.

"It looked terrifying, looked ugly." Acevedo continued. "I could have sworn whoever was over there, they were trying to get somebody out."

Another neighbor, Alex Villa, said he believes he heard what sounded to him like street racing before the deafening impact, "then we opened the door for the kid's truck and stuff and he was passed out. He was just snoring. He was knocked out unconscious. You could tell he was hurt pretty bad"

The elderly woman who lives inside the home was not injured, according to her family. They will be awaiting the arrival of a City Inspector to determine if it is safe to enter the structure to begin repairs.

The family of the homeowner believes the driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. El Paso Police have not verified if they are investigating this as a possibility. Her family has established a GoFundMe account to help pay for repairs.
