More minorities need organ transplants, but wait twice as long

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Giselle Martinez, 13, was hit by a truck while walking home from school last Friday.

Although she tragically passed away, she will continue to live on -- her family decided to donate her organs.

According to the Southwest Transplant Alliance, 58 percent of those on the national transplant waiting list are minorities. However, many wait twice as long to receive transplants.

"A lot of people in minority groups have high blood pressure, diabetes, and they're more likely to need transplants," Karla Martinez of the Southwest Transplant Alliance told KTSM.

Two percent of people who pass away are candidates of organ donations.
