Founder of famed Licon Dairy dies

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - The man at the heart of a borderland landmark has died.

Licon Dairy founder Eugenio Licon, Sr. died Saturday after battling heart-related health issues, family told KTSM. This coming Saturday would have marked his 60th wedding anniversary.

Licon opened the San Elizario dairy in the 1950s with a handful of cows, selling his now famed asadero cheese door to door. Over the years, the family farm blossomed into a successful business, restaurant, and petting zoo.

"Everywhere you look, it's my grandfather," grandson Angel Licon said. "He did everything with his own two hands"

Angel will now carry his grandpa's legacy, telling KTSM, "He built this over the last 60 years and his dream was just to give back to the community and just show that hard work does pay off."
