EPISD's Byrd calls for Cabrera's resignation

(KTSM) - UPDATE #2: Susie Byrd's motion calling for Superintendent Juan Cabrera's resignation failed on a 4-2 vote Thursday morning. Instead, the board voted to extend Cabrera's contract for one year.

His contract is now in effect through 2023. The board did not vote to increase Cabrera's pay or incentives with the new extension.

UPDATE #1: EPISD Trustee Susie Byrd called for district Superintendent Juan Cabrera's resignation at a special board meeting on Thursday, citing two clauses in his contract: 'immorality' and 'conscious misrepresentation to the board.' Cabrera did not immediately respond to the charges.

Trustee Diane Dye then called for Byrd to recuse herself over a 'conflict of interest.'

PREVIOUS: El Paso Independent School District Trustee Susie Byrd announced Thursday that Superintendent Juan Cabrera has filed a grievance against her.

Byrd’s statement came after the school board resumed open session at a special meeting. The trustees had been discussing several topics behind closed doors, including Cabrera’s evaluation and contract.

Byrd attempted to postpone the closed session matters for another meeting, a motion that was not supported by any of the other trustees.

"For the public’s information, the reason that I’m asking that this be postponed is that a grievance has been filed against me by Juan Cabrera,” Byrd said. "I want to make sure the people understand the reason."

Byrd’s comments were interrupted and called out by Trustee Diane Dye and Board President Trent Hatch who felt Byrd spoke out of turn since the board had already voted to return to closed discussion.

Byrd did not elaborate as to why Cabrera filed the grievance. However, tension has arisen among the trustees over Byrd’s involvement with former El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar’s congressional campaign. That topic was also on the agenda for Thursday's meeting.

Escobar is running against former EPISD Board President Dori Fenenbock. Cabrera has in the past been accused of advocating for Fenenbock's campaign, a charge he has denied.
