Construction of Paseo de las Luces project begins in Downtown El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Downtown El Paso is about to get a little more lit.

Crews have begun constructing a passageway where the borderland awaits its signature archways to light up the Paseo de las Luces.

String lighting, improved parking, and a corridor connecting El Paso and 6th streets to San Antonio and El Paso streets will also be added to the area.

The project aims to re-energize the area and welcome international travelers to the city's center.

"The impact it could have for this corridor is significant not just for the citizens, but for the businesses and visitors coming from Mexico," El Paso City Engineer Sam Rodriguez told KTSM earlier this year.

The Paseo de las Luces project is the third piece to be unveiled from the Sun City Lights initiative.

The $6.4 million project is paid through Downtown's tax increment reinvestment zone, and revenues from international bridge tolls and Saturday parking meter fees.

The city tells KTSM the other archway at San Antonio and El Paso street is expected to be installed sometime next week.
