Alleged DUI driver caused deadly crash on Anthony Gap

ANTHONY, NM (KTSM) - New Mexico State Police arrested and charged a man who was allegedly driving under the influence when he caused a chain reaction that killed one person and injured two others on NM 404 (Anthony Gap) Thursday afternoon.

Jeramy Lucero, 23, of Las Cruces is charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor or Drug and Reckless Driving.

According to NMSP traffic investigators, Lucero was driving a 2007 Dodge station wagon West on the Anthony Gap near MM 8 when he attempted to pass another vehicle driving in the same direction. Lucero pulled out to pass and hit an oncoming 2004 Honda, causing the Honda to sideswipe a third vehicle and roll over, catching fire.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the extent of the fire involved in the crash, a positive identification of the driver is pending.

Emergency crews also transported the driver and passenger of the third vehicle involved to Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash is still under investigation. New Mexico State Police say additional charges against Lucero are expected.
