Las Cruces Police have confirmed the arrest of Michael Derby in Las Cruces. Keep watching NewsChannel 9 for details on the arrest.
Police say Derby was taken into custody shortly after 6:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, near downtown Las Cruces at the corner of Picacho Avenue and Alameda Boulevard after a someone called 911 after seeing a pedestrian, later identified as Derby, experience a medical emergency as he walked westbound on Picacho Avenue.
Derby was transported to a local hospital where, at this time, he remains in police custody.
LCPD says Derby faces charges of escape from a peace officer and theft of a vehicle. Additional charges are possible locally and he faces felony charges in El Paso for Sunday’s incident. Bond for Derby is set at $100,000 cash.
Las Cruces Police continue to search for 24-year-old Michael Derby who escaped custody near the Memorial Medical Center campus on Wednesday evening.
Police say Derby was in the custody of the Doña Ana Detention Center while at an examination center near Memorial Medical Center when Derby fled and ran to a Pic Quik at 2580 S. Don Roser Dr.
Derby allegedly stole a Dodge pickup truck with a horse trailer attached. The pickup truck and the trailer, which had three horses and a dog inside, were found an hour later in the area of Thomas Drive.
Police say Derby used a cell-phone that was inside of the stolen pickup truck to call a friend. Police believe a relative gave Derby a ride.
Derby’s whereabouts are unknown at this time.
UPDATE 11:45 PM:
Police are in the area near Conlee Elementary School on Missouri Ave., where the stolen truck and trailer have been found.
NewsChannel9 spoke with the owner of the vehicles that Derby allegedly stole. The owner says the truck and the trailer have been returned and that the horses and dog that were inside of the trailer are ok.
NMSU Police say a prisoner escaped custody near the Memorial Medical Center campus Wednesday night.
24-year old Michael Derby is described as 5″11″, 181 lbs, tattoo of skull on back calf. NMSU Police say he has a light goatee and short hair.
NMSU Police say Derby stole a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 copper brown in color truck pulling a white rusted goose neck trailer. They say the vehicle may have New Mexico license plate “2 8 7 S T D.”
Derby had been arrested on Sunday after leading officers from the Las Cruces Police and El Paso Police Department on a chase that crossed state lines.
