UTEP freshman Jordan Lathon made a baseline jump shot as the buzzer sounded on Saturday night to defeat Rice 65-64 at the Don Haskins Center.
The Miners trailed the Owls 64-63 with 0.5 seconds left, but an Ountae Campbell pass found Lathon open, and he drilled the jumper as time expired.
The final shot was by no means the only heroics. Nigel Hawkins poured in 24 points for UTEP, and Lathon made a jumper to beat the shot clock with under 20 seconds left to give UTEP a 63-61 advantage.
Then, with under two seconds left, Rice’s Trey Murphy nailed a contested corner three to give the Owls the lead and set up Lathon’s final heroics.
The victory pushes UTEP to 6-9 and 1-3 in Conference USA play. They’ll hit the road to play UAB and Middle Tennessee next week.
