Migrant farm workers in the Borderland will soon have the opportunity to learn new skills in order to get better jobs thanks to a grant from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.

TDHCA awarded the Opportunity Center for the Homeless a $100,000 grant that will benefit 270 families in the border region.

The director of the Border Farmworkers Center tells NewsChannel that a farmer’s average annual income for their seasonal work is less than $7,000.

“This is a grant that will allow us to help farm workers seek better alternatives and other opportunities to improve their lives,” said Carlos Marentes.
