From soccer stadium to baseball field: Southwest University Park set for Opening Day

News

Over the last several weeks, Southwest University Park has transformed into a soccer stadium. But on Thursday, it’s back to baseball for the El Paso Chihuahuas.

The Chihuahuas open the 2019 season Thursday evening against the Las Vegas Aviators.

Just two days ago, El Paso Locomotive FC played at Southwest University Park and captured the first win in team history.

Only a few hours after the win, the park’s grounds crew arrived to get the field ready for the Chihuahuas.

“We definitely live in a dry climate where we are constantly managing moisture,” Head Groundskeeper Travis Howard told KTSM. “On a baseball field, there’s so many edges that we have to maintain, whether it be the grass edge to the warning track, or the grass edge around home plate, the pitcher’s mound, and all of the clay we have to maintain.”

Although Thursday is the start of the Chihuahuas’ sixth season, many players have been ready to take the field for several weeks.

“All the guys are a little more pumped up than usual,” Pitcher Jerry Keel said. “It’s almost like a playoff environment, but it’s Day One. It’s going to be exciting. the fans will be rocking, it will be fun.”
