Three people — including two El Pasoans — were killed in a rollover crash near Balmorhea Monday morning.
According to a Texas Highway Patrol spokesperson, the crash happened just after 11 a.m. on I-10 near mile marker 205.
Officials say the vehicle was traveling on the freeway’s westbound lanes when its right rear tire separated, causing the car to lose control and roll over.
Passengers Clifton Tucker, 29, and Amanda Akaji, 25, of El Paso and Andrew C. Akaji, 29, of Belleview, Fla. were all pronounced dead at the scene.
Genesis B. Soto, 29, and Drianna Soto, 3, of El Paso were also hospitalized with “incapacitating injuries”.
The above passengers were not wearing seatbelts, according to officials.
Driver Joseph Kennerly III, 34, of Virginia and passenger Marcus R. Lovelace, 22, of Louisiana were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As KTSM previously reported, Tucker was a star basketball player at Chapin High School and, later, the University of Maryland.
The university announced the news of his passing on Twitter earlier this evening:
The Maryland basketball family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cliff Tucker (’11). Our hearts go out to the Tucker family during this time.
We love you Cliff.
