People from around the city and country are paying their respects to fallen El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter Herrera.

Zechariah Cartledge, 10, of Florida honored Herrera on Monday by running one mile with a symbolic thin blue line flag.

“I really want to honor them because they do so much for us,” Cartledge told KTSM. “Police are not bad people…they should be respected like everyone else.”

After the run, Zechariah will send the flag to Herrera’s family with a handwritten note.

“The family and department stay in my prayers,” he said. “Hopefully the run gave them a little more happiness.”

Zechariah says he began running as a hobby several years ago, but now practices the sport to remember the legacy of fallen law enforcement officers.

“I do this to honor the officers who have passed away,” he said. “Police officers are really good people, they’re not bad people, and people really need to stop giving hate on them.”

Zechariah tells KTSM that he’s traveled more than 60 miles since last year.

In addition to running, he is also raising money for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to help military and first responders who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Zechariah has raised more than $33,000 for the foundation. Anyone interested in contributing can click HERE.
