Family of Maurella Clemente Munoz and Jose Manuel Clemente say that the entire family was heading to Puerto Penasco, Mexico when the horrific 25-car pileup happened, killing the father and his daughter during a dust storm on Monday.
According to family members, Jose Manuel and his wife, Consuelo had just celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on Saturday when the couple, along with daughter Maurella and her husband and young son set out in the same vehicle toward Puerto Penasco.
Another family member was following the car on their way to Puerto Penasco as well.
When they got to the Lordsburg area, the massive dust storm engulfed the cars, causing zero visibility resulting in the pile-up. The Clemente-Munoz family was the first car hit in the chain reaction crash.
The family member who was following the Clemente-Munoz’s car was able to swerve out of the way to avoid the crash and immediately attempted to pull out the people inside of the vehicle.
Jose Manuel’s wife, Consuelo, suffered life-threatening injuries and is still in ICU at University Medical Center in El Paso. Maurella’s husband and son also sustained injuries and are still being treated.
Family members say that Jose Manuel retired after over 20 years of service in the U.S. Army and his daughter, Maurella, went on to marry a soldier as well.
In addition to the two El Pasoans killed in the crash, Jose Elias Caraveo-Serrano, his wife Susane Caraveo and their 9-month old daughter Julissa of Phoenix along with Josefina Silva of Escondido, CA were also killed in the crash.
The Clemente-Munoz family has set up a GoFundMe account to assist with the medical care for the survivors for immediate expenses and funeral costs. You can donate by clicking HERE.
