El Paso Police say a woman who was standing on the sidewalk was struck by a stop sign and died after an alleged drunk driver ran over the curb near the Cincinnati Entertainment District early Wednesday morning.

The crash  happened around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday morning at 2900 N. Stanton, behind the Walgreens. El Paso Police investigators say that 33-year-old Xiaoyan Shi was standing on the sidewalk on the corner of Stanton and Mississippi when a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche driving north on Stanton made a left turn, running over the sidewalk and hitting the stop sign.

Shi was hit by the falling stop sign while she was standing on the sidewalk, she sustained a major head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.

El Paso Police say the driver of the Avalance, identified as 26-year-old Lorenzo Anchondo of Sunland Park showed signs of intoxication and was placed under arrest.

Investigators say that alcohol, as well as driving off the roadway and failure to stop at the stop sign were all factors in this crash. Anchondo was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility for Intoxication Manslaughter and his bond has been set at $75,000.

This is the 11th traffic fatality of 2017 compared to 12 during this time in 2016.
